This 1981 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia I have owned since 2010. It was originally Brown/Tan in color with an air-cooled “oil-leaking” engine. Small Car Performance in Tacoma, Washington completed the Subaru 2.5 Forester Conversion Fall 2010, with a 30,000 mileage engine) and it was repainted with newer Volkswagen Beetle Sundown Orange Paint. Last month cosmetic dings and fender damage was repaired along with another repaint. In 2011, the upholstery was redone, along with the pop-top canvas. The refrigerator was removed and a Go Westy kit installed in it’s place. I’m not aware of any mileage/odometer changes prior to my purchase, and can only state to the best of my knowledge that: 226,757 miles @ 12/2010, 265,546 miles @ 9/2013, 274,000 miles @ 5/2014, current miles are 4,200. Odometer was replaced 5/2014

To review the initial items that were completed with the conversion, please visit Small Car Performance web site. There have been upgrades since the original modification, including a top-end rebuild, catalytic converter, stainless steel muffler in 2013 and clutch / brake replacements in 2014.

Installed are steel bumpers with 2″ receiver, Lithium Battery System and Espar gas heater. The Lithium Batteries are set into a cabinet, charged by the alternator. When switched on, can either jump start the Vanagon with the rear mounted Battery Combiner Switch, or power devices (Espar heater or inverter). This has been used here in the Northwest to power a Wynter refrigerator, run the heater and lights for 3-4 days.

The vehicle passed a smog test in 2010 in Portland, Oregon, but has since been relicensed in Washington State. Small Car Performance states that it should pass again if emission tested. It is my understanding that this engine will NOT pass emissions in California.
