Overview: I am the second owner of the van and purchased it in March of 2003. It has been in no accidents, meticulously maintained and is ready for a cross country road trip at the drop of a hat. Over the course of my ownership the van has seen time as a daily driver but over the last three years has been predominantly used for road trips and the occasional errand once a week to get it out of the garage. Significant effort has been made to modernize the van, making it safer, more capable (specifically for camping and overland travel) and when practical giving it the comforts of a modern vehicle.
Engine: Stephan’s Auto House 1.8T conversion completed in April 2015 w/ new crate engine installed by Eion’s Automotive in Seattle, WA. 267,043 miles currently on vehicle. ~46,490 miles since conversion. Engine is chipped, rated at: 240 HP and 240 ft/lbs torque. Working cruise control and air conditioning. Blazecut fire suppression system installed in engine bay. More info at: http://h2ovanagon.com/
Drivetrain and Transaxle: Four speed manual transmission w/ additional crawling/ granny gear. Syncro (4WD system) w/ decoupler/solid shaft along with locking front and rear axles. 6.17 ring and pinion and custom gearing to work w/ 1.8T and 245/75R-16 tires. Transaxle last rebuilt by German Transaxle of Bend, OR in 12/23/2019 @ 265,247 miles. Still under 12 month/12,000 mile warrantee. Porsche 930 axles/CVs installed in November 2018. Van averages a little better than 16 mpg with mixed use.
Suspension: Burley Motorsports Radflo Syncro Suspension installed 2017. 16” Rear trailing arms. 930 Axles and CVs. More details: https://burleymotorsports.net/product/bms-radflo-syncro-suspension-system/
Brakes:
-Front VW South African Big Brakes for 16” wheels. New rotors and pads installed Mar 2020.
-Rear, VW LT drums, oversized & designed for 16” wheels. Have kept drums in rear for superior off-road holding power over discs. New drums and shoes installed Mar 2020.
Body/Interior: 1991 Syncro Wesfalia originally orly blue metallic exterior with gray interior.
-Restoration completed by Bailey’s Auto Restoration (Marysville, WA) in Feb 2017. Exterior painted dune beige with black trim. The body is in good shape but not perfect. I would give it a 9/10 and if you are concerned with the imperfections suggest seeing it first hand as photographs I have taken are not the best at pointing out the few blemishes while maintaining a good reference. Interior painted to match exterior and black carpeting and black leather bucket seats up front. Original gray upholstery on the rear seats and both beds. Custom black ABS panels installed on interior.
-Seating consists of two leather bucket seats up front (stow and go out of a Chrysler Town and Country), a bench seat in the rear that seats two and a removable 5th passenger jump seat behind the front passenger.
-Keyless entry w/ power locking doors.
-Power windows.
