1991 Vanagon that runs like new with 193,000 miles.
I used this van primarily for trips to the beach, and long road trips. Before I purchased Ruby Sue in 2015, the van spent many years on San Juan Island and lived a life of gentle driving and tender caring maintenance. It has been driven regularly for road trips, but not as a daily driver. This van is a solid runner and I am sad to say goodbye to her but am just not using her as much.
The 2.1-liter drives and shifts stronger and smoother than a stock 1.9 liter. She’s not perfect, most notably, there is a bit of damage to the passenger side rear bumper, and the paint while undamaged, shows its age. You will need to add power steering fluid once a year, but other than that this van has been very well cared for and has a long recorded history of maintenance summarized below.
The stock interior of this van is in very good condition and the camper cabinets are cute and functional. The curtains are great for privacy, block out light for sleeping in, and they’re darn cute. The custom floor is an upgrade to the stock carpet and is easy to sweep and clean up. The bed is quite large compared to the Westfalia bed offering an extra foot and a half or so, pretty essential if you’re sharing a bed with a friend, loved one, or maybe giant backpack, 2 storage totes full of adventure gear, and all your groceries for the weekend…
