This is a Very hard to find, 1986 Volkswagen 4×4 Syncro that was converted to a Pop Top Camper using a Westfalia donor van. This cool unit also has a TDI Diesel Conversion. Please check out the you tube video with tons of information here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atfxjd_lpOc&t=561s
This unit was imported to Florida from Holland in 2017, for a customer in Chicago Ill. We purchased this from an online dealer auction, and it now is ready to sell. The Van itself was a tin top sunroof Syncro Diesel. It appears to have been painted at some point and has some rust bubbles at the seams as seen in the pictures and the video. It is very solid underneath. The motor runs well, it has smoke at start up but clears up once it is warmed up a little, and has the power it should.
It drives excellent, lots of mechanical work as been done. The brakes stop it nice, the steering is tight and it is comfortable to drive at any speed. The 4 speed shifter is sloppy but works and you can find all of the gears. It has dual power seats, with 3 memory settings for the driver, and the passenger swivels around for seating when you are camping. On the dash, the speedometer works but it is in Kilometers. The Odometer does not work and is at 105K Kilometers, True miles are unknown on this unit.
The fuel gauge works, as does the aftermarket oil pressure gauge, and it has good oil pressure as well. The digital volt meter works and monitors both the engine battery (now located in the rear) and the huge Coach Battery under the back bench seat as well. Water, oil temp, gauges did not work and the boos gauge is not hooked up. But they look cool sitting there! All of the normal safety items work, Wipers, squirters, lights turn signals, flashers, heater, horn (button on the dash) The aftermarket cruise does not work, and the aftermarket radio works as well.
Inside the Camper part, you will find all of the amenities you would expect, including a butane Stove, Sink with fresh, and grey water tanks, Refrigerator, Air Conditioning that will run off the battery for aprox 4 hours without being plugged in. There is a bench seats that folds down to a bed, with all new upholstery, and new flooring. 110 outlets with USB Ports. Under the bed it a huge battery and a power inverter with control panel. And of course a bed in the Pop Top. The Canvas in the pop top is not brand new, but it is good and functional with a few patches that we had our upholster take care of, as well as a new screen in the front zip down window.Outside you will find an awning that works well.
The BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires are in great shape on on Mercedes Wheels. We found a matching Mercedes Wheel and a nice Good Year all terrain to use for the spare. Since we had to have a place to put that we installed Brand New Go Westy Bumpers front and rear. with the tall spare tire carrier, and trailer hitch option.
We also added the Roto Pax Diesel Fuel Container, and Black Tool Box on the back carrier for that tough but necessary off road look.I apologize, and freely admit that I am not a VW Van Guy (I am a VW TDI Diesel Guy) So I do not know all of the ins and outs of the Volkswagen Van’s like most Fans would. But if you have any questions or if I made a mistake on this unit feel free to let me know.
I do have a Professional Van Guy at my disposal and he helped me out with the video as well, so big thanks to Kevin for that! Please note that we are not promoting this van as a perfectly restored unit that needs nothing. As most 34 year old vehicles it will need some tinkering to be perfect. But what it is, is a very usable turn key unit, that is Ultra Rare and Desirable with the 4×4 Syncro, TDI Conversion and a Westy Conversion.
