More Details & Pictures

Decided to sell our van. It has been very good to us. We put a ton of money and effort into it and have been rewarded with some awesome experiences and a wonderful road trip. This van is far from original with some awesome modifications. It started life with a gasoline waterboxer. We purchased it as a non running 1.6L Turbo Diesel. Timing belt was broken. Interior was not impressive since it was a Riviera weekender. However it was virtually rust free (except rear quarter on right side under bumper). So it was a great van to start a project with. We then replaced or upgraded almost everything on the bus. See below for specific details. I have driven this van for over 10,000 miles. Almost all of which are highway miles. It has taken us from Seattle to Southern California, up to Colorado and all over the west coast. We will continue to travel and love his van until purchased. I have lots of pictures detailing the restoration and the new or replaced parts being installed.

1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Riviera
Color: marine blue
Interior: blue carpet, black vinyl seats, grey cloth in rear.
Mileage: 190,000+ original
Engine: 1.6l Turbo Diesel (JX block code ORIGINAL TO VANAGONS ONLY – foreign market)
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Pop top camper: canvas is in good condition – a little dirty. Small tears In Screen. Pop top has crack in rear. Does not affect functionality. Still water tight. Fully functional.
Seems to be 95%+ original paint
No accidents, bent rear bumper.

Engine:
Fully rebuilt! Brand new Pistons, bored +1.00mm (it is almost 1.7l). Brand new bearings, and rings. Brand new cylinder head. All gaskets, seals, belts fluids, and filters brand new. New fuel lines. Injection pump was fully disassembled, media blasted, and rebuilt with new gaskets and seals (cold start lever inop). Brand new injectors. Upgraded alternator to 90amp. New waterpump and thermostat. Rebuilt turbo with brand new cartridge. Block heater. New muffler and original mounting hardware for JX. Runs well when warm. Always starts even when cold, however no cold start lever makes him smoke a little until you get him under load or warmed up. Not an issue. Got it to start in sub zero temps. and the best part: 27mpg average. More if you drive at 50mph mostly.

Transmission:
4-speed shifts well. No issues. When I had motor out the clutch disc looked great. I would have guessed 70% remaining when I had it out.

Body:
Mostly original. Had some bumps and scrapes. When waxed up it looks great. Has 190,000 miles so don’t expect a perfect paint job. Most dents could be removed if you wanted. I may or may not fix any larger paint blemish before it is sold. Some rust on pinch rail behind right rear wheel. Not very noticeable at all completely surface. Might also have fixed before sale. Inside panels are sound deadened and installed one shear of temperature foil insulation.

Interior:
As you can see it is not original. However very functional. Front seats are factoryish black vinyl. Front carpet is original and in ok shape. Dash has no cracks and in good condition. Everything inside works (front blower motor went out, but I will resolve that). Rear heater works great. Factory A/C unit functions. However no compressor on motors means it is only a fan. All hoses are there for hook-up if you wanted to make it fully functional. 4.2cft dometic fridge/freezer works. Both 12v and 110v. Runs off 2 group 27 batteries under rear seat. Kitchen cabinet is a modified original to fit fridge. Converted water storage to roller spice rack/food storage. Installed additional deep drawer under counter for storage. His 5 gallons water unit under rear cabinet out of way. Sink is functional with electric water pump running faucet. Countertop is a mahogany “butcher board” style with matching center table. Radio is functional with iPod hookup and great front speakers. It is wired for subwoofer of you wish and rear speakers if you wish (not installed). Bed and rear jumper seat have new memory foam. Fairly comfortable. Pergo floors. Re-covered interior panels. Has short power hookup, fresh water fill, and hose water hookup on outside of van. Hose water hookup is functional however the faucet for hose water does not turn off. So use onboard water.

Suspension: mostly original. Shocks look to be newer but I cannot verify that. Drives strait. Has new winter tires. Bushings squeak slightly when going over large bumps in front.

Needs new windshield. I will take $280 off negotiated price to compensate for that.

Many more pictures available at request.

In no hurry to sell. We will be traveling in the van through May. Will consider selling during trip for the right price. Thank you for looking!
