Almost hurts to post this, but the family is pivoting to a VW Eurovan for a bit more space and it’s time to offer this Westy to a new home.

I traveled to Colorado to pick up this van in 2016, as it was meticulously restored by Cars With Character in Colorado Springs with the following work, which is an excerpt from the 2016 posting:

With more than 250 hours of documented labor (not including body and paint work), this Vanagon is more than just a pretty face. We retrieved this Westy from bone dry Tuscon Arizona where it had been parked for decades. There is no rust through on this vehicle. We had it painted in March 2015 as the first step in the restoration and have been putting it back together since then. Using it to deliver packages for 6 weeks gave it a thorough shakedown. Now it’s ready to take a new owner camping.

This is the popular “Weekender” model which trades the stove and refrigerator for more useful cargo space, a convenient popup table, and a larger rear bed. Many owners prefer the flexibility offered by this less common version of the Westfalia.

We stripped the engine to the short block, milled the heads, replaced the head gaskets, and resealed. With a new upper ball joint, new shocks, factory alloy wheels, and Hankook RA08 tires, this Vanagon handles great and cruises comfortably on the highway. Both the front and rear heater fans work. Winter driving is more than comfortable. This is the most quiet Vanagon I have driven.

Since then, we have camped and adventured in the Weekender with the family. Most extensive trip was to Tennessee and back loaded down with 4 kids and a dog.

Maintained by Kenny Hill VW since I’ve had it, with the only notable work done with new rear axles and CV joints.

The Weekender model is less common, provides greater seating space (seats 6), and you don’t have to cook on a 35 year old stove in the van (and smell the fajitas all night as you sleep!).

Odometer stopped working about 5k miles ago. Speedometer stopped working then as well …. but that’s part of the fun in these old vehicles. Simply needs a new cable, but I have not made that a priority.
