A brand new 1998 TDI AFN 110hp industrial engine found a 1984 Vanagon Westfalia
Waterboxer in need of restoration and an engine. Seven years later “Bessie” is camping again. Less than 10k miles on the restoration, approximately 185k on the body.
• New engine modified with VNT 17/22 turbo and ALH intake and exhaust manifolds including EGR. Engine control unit from 2003 TDI (easy to tune). Averages about 30 mpg mostly highway with a 130hp tune. Wifi OBD2. Aftermarket diesel catalytic converter. Liquid intercooler pump temperature-controlled and intake air temp displayed.
• Transaxle has new taller ring and pinion (4.57), new taller 3rd and 4th gears (1.14/0.70), oiling plates and other enhancements by AA Transaxle. Brickworks TDI input shaft with TDI DMF clutch assembly. The DMF is smoother than a single mass clutch. With her 195R14 tires on stock rims, at 65 mph she revs 2700 rpm per the charts. Carat springs for slight lowering.
• “Bessie” was from southwestern USA and had almost no rust, just a couple small spots. “Windows out” paint job is my third one, looks OK. Could be sanded and buffed smooth if desired. Stock Ivory color, original paint interior and original gelcoat on pop-top. New OEM canvas in pop-top.
• Changed factory rear AC to dealer aftermarket Behr in-dash AC. Four dash AC outlets. Currently has a leak to be fixed this winter.
• Full restoration of moving and rubber parts, stainless cooling pipes, brakes, fuel system, seat belts …a long list.
• Added cruise control and a new GPS speedometer.
• TDI wiring connections and relays protected and accessible under bench seat back wall. Spreadsheet wiring documentation is quite thorough.
• Able to check oil and catch can level through rear license plate.
• Aux battery under left front seat with fuses and Yandina isolating/charging controls protected under sink; engine battery under passenger seat. Locomotive cables. Solar ready.
• Alpine double din touch screen media receiver in modified second OE instrument pod with backup camera, hands-free calling, wired Car Play, etc.
• Reupholstered with OEM fabric. Bedding and bench seat have new thicker memory foam. Dual map pockets. Fridge removed, added storage shelves. Original tables, screens, curtains, sink, stove. New faucet, new propane tank, new skylight with homemade screen.
• Lots of spare parts, a new carpet kit, and some camping equipment if desired.
New means new at time of restoration/rebuild. Restoration started 5/2014 and mostly completed by 5/2021.
