1980 VW Vanagon Westfalia
I’ve owned this vehicle about 25 years, bought it with about 80K miles. The original trans was junk, I replaced it with an ’83 trans ( by then VW had figured out that you couldn’t use a main shaft bearing with a plastic ball separator cage. . .)
I’ve been a VW enthusiast since the ’60’s. I’ve used it as a 3 season camper, and garaged it in winter. It has not been a daily driver. It has been all over the west and to Baja twice. It was in very good shape when I got it and still is. The original carpets have always had another carpet over them! It is mostly original. Around 2006 or so, it was getting slow and starting to use oil, so I pulled the engine one winter and rebuilt it carefully with the best german parts I could get. It runs great. The same winter, I had the body in the shop, so I sanded out all the rock chips, metal prepped them, and touched up the spots. It looks real nice, with the patina one would expect in an original 35 year old vehicle. It is not perfect, but has aged well. It probably has about 160K miles on it now. The pop top canvas is just OK, and will last a few more years. The propane fridge is hard to start, but I have the tech bulletin about how you change the o-ring on the air pump ( it starts with “remove the refrigerator. . .” ) I use the fridge as a veggie cooler, and carry a chest cooler for the beer. The rear seat has been reupholstered. The curtains are dying of age and harsh sun, but when you camp in the woods, who needs curtains? I have the original manuals, a Haynes manual, and service records since new.
Reason for selling my fourth lifetime Westy: I bought a 2003 Sprinter 158″ cargo van and created my own camper, a cross between Westy and Ikea, everything is similar, but bigger, better, stronger and faster. This will be my retirement vehicle for the next decade , so the VW needs a new home.
