1989 VW Vanagon Westfalia

2.1l Waterboxer, Automatic transmission.
115k miles, approximately.- The speedo head was replaced @81,500k

We are selling Madeleine, fresh from a summer road trip out west. She is in remarkably good condition, having been garage kept for many years by the previous owners. We bought her this May for my in-laws to enjoy some social distance and to visit us in Colorado over the summer. Now that is accomplished they are heading back to Europe and it is time to pass her along to the next owners!

We picked Madeleine because of her overall condition. All original interior shows very well (I’ve never seen such a nice dashboard!), and the body is in original paint in great shape. Naturally there were a few repairs and deferred maintenance issues to resolve prior to the trip, and I really wanted to get ahead of as many potential issues so my older in-laws would not have to worry about them. She is ready to go now after a solid shakedown trip.

Here’s a list of recent improvements:

ECU replaced

We had the brakes gone over by a trusted shop.
-New front rotors, pads, calipers, and brake lines.
-Rear drum cleaned and adjusted
-full chassis grease.

Oil Changed, fuel/air/oil filters, fuel pump, fuel lines from tank to engine bay, bulbs, wipers, radio antennae, ignition wires, spark plugs, belts, coil, temp sensor, O2 sensor, and some misc hoses/wiring.

Both head gaskets replaced after a blowout on the hwy. A coolant line had let loose at the pressure tank and the right side gasket failed. The motor had previously rebuilt at 94,500 miles, 10 years ago . I managed to find a friendly Vanagon enthusiast nearby (shout out to Tim in Georgia!) who tackled the issue, replacing both gaskets and thus another oil change, coolant change, and a thorough going over on the cooling system to look for any potential weak spots.

External transmission oil cooler from van cafe installed on arrival in Denver. This is a worthy project for any automatic transmission as it eliminates the potential for a failure leading to the catastrophic mixing of cooling system and transmission fluids.

I added an Auxiliary battery kit from van cafe, and built a 66amp hr battery bank.

Drivers side window motor replaced.

Hatch gasket skylight.

Added cassette toilet and box. (it’s not shown on the pictures but the box lives behind the passenger seat.)

Replaced distributor.

Speedo cable failed and will be replaced shortly.

Waiting on heater cable and will replace asap.

14″ wheels could use new tires.

Top bunk had been decommissioned by PO. It is missing the fwd deck board and the mattress. They used the space for extra storage, as did my in-laws. Sink and stove work, and the propane tank, while no longer new, has been updated. The fridge works on gas, slowly on 120v, and not on DC. There is a heavy duty 12v socket to the house bank that will run a cooler just fine.
