Pop Top Camper – ASI conversation – A Westy of this era was one of two things – a complete conversion in Germany or they sent over unfished and then upfitted in the USA. This is an ASI conversion, out of Oregon, many of the same features, same engine, same specs but slightly different camper and pop top layouts. This van has been in the pacific northwest or Rocky Mountains for its life, no Midwest or East Coast salt and spray.

Sleeps 4 (2 on fold down bed in back and sleeps 2 small adults or kids up top)

Dining Table/ Swivel Front Passenger Seat

Ice Box – self draining – throw in a block of ice and you are good. Way better than the propane fridge every gets rid of in the original Westy.

THE GOOD

We have currently owned this vehicle for 13 years and taken good care of it, I think this is a 3 owner van, with us being the 3rd owners.

VW no longer builds these or imports into the US so there are only so many, here’s your chance to own a nice one.

Runs well

Original Paint

Installed shoulder harness in the rear passenger seat for passenger side rider (installed in factory threaded inserts per GoWesty installation manual.

Two sets of keys – one with includes a palm tree bottle opener which is always handy.

THE UNIQUE, INTERESTING OR COULD USED FIXED IF YOU WANT

Master Disconnect switch installed by the driver’s seat – good for long term storage to prevent battery drain.

Ignition switch was redone before we purchased it and requires you to insert key and hit a push button – works fine, I consider it an anti-theft device because if you do not know how to do it, you can’t start the van by turning the key alone. I was going to fix, but it works fine, so I never bothered.

Propane tank likely requires a fitting braised on, so it can be filled. We purchased it this way, and we have never worried about this as we do not cook in it or use the heater.

One roof bow on pop top is cracked (snow load), does not leak as it is the inside of the molded plastic not the exterior -everything still works. I have repaired the bow with a piece of metal.

Face of ice box veneer is cracked (purely cosmetic).

A repair of the roof with fiberglass repair tape and epoxy – fixed crack due to snow load – no leaks – this was repaired 5 years ago, and I never have had any issues.

Bug Screen in camper pop top is a little ripped and rough – but repaired with screen repair tape.

Montana Windshield – cracked but not in your field of view

Odometer broke approximately 5,000 miles ago, speedometer still works. This can be repaired and is not an uncommon problem, but it requires replacing the entire speedometer which then gives you an inaccurate mileage number anyway. I was going to replace it when I was thinking about a Subaru engine in it, but every time I took it in to the mechanic I was told the engine is running good why would you want to replace it, so we never did.

Rear wiper blade does not work.

This vehicle should go to a good home, someone who is going to use it regularly. Take it to the park, take it to the river, take it to the desert, take it to the coast, pop the top and you are camping. It is hard to let this VW go, but we are ready to move on to something else.
