Turn-key ready camper, fly in and drive it home. Its ready for whatever road trip you have planned, or just use it as a daily driver. Just finished a 5 month 20k+ mile trip around the country while living out of the van.
Engine: The donor car was a 2003 subaru outback. The bottom end has roughly 130K miles on it. Prior to installation, the heads were decked, new valve seals installed and 3 angle valve job. New OEM head gaskets and bolts used, along with a high quality gates timing belt kit (with Japanese manufactured bearings in the pulleys, not Chinese parts). New NGK plugs, wires, and a new ignition coil. New cam and crank seals, valve cover gaskets, pcv valve, rear main seal, wrist pin cover o-ring, intake and throttle body gaskets. All cooling system components are new, including radiator with upgraded silicone hoses. No leaks and it runs great!
Conversion: The kit came from Rocky Mountain Westy (Van Cafe) and includes the upgraded stainless steel coolant pipes and speed sensor. RMW also did the wiring harness modification, its extremely neat and tidy, and wires are all labeled. New OEM engine mounts and new transmission mount were used upon installation.
Transmission: rebuilt at time of conversion. Kept the stock gearing. New clutch and throw out bearing. New clutch slave and master cylinder. All shifter bushings were replaced. New generic auto parts store axles.
Wheels/Tires/Brakes: Stock 14″ steel wheels with 27 x 8.5R14 Maxxis Buckshot II Mud Terrains. They drive and handle very nicely, but they are a touch loud. Includes matching full size spare tire. The entire braking system was replaced at the same time except for the hard lines (which are in great shape, zero rust or corrosion). Master cylinder, calipers, pads, rotors, front wheel bearings and seals, shoes, drums, hardware, wheel cylinders, and all the rubber brake lines were replaced with upgraded braided steel units.
Body: extremely solid and rust free. There was a spot of rust in the windshield frame, but the windshield was removed, rusty area cut out, new metal welded in The entire inner area of the windshield frame was cleaned, Ospho’d, and painted with a sealing enamel prior to installing the window with a new seal. The lower passenger corner of the windshield frame is where the rust was, so the paint is a slightly different color there. Windshield does have 2 small chips in it which occurred on this most recent trip, I assume they can be filled/repaired. Original 2 tone paint is still in decent shape and will look really good with a bit of buffing and wax. The rear hatch is from a different van and is black. I assume it was in a minor rear end collision at some point and someone just swapped the rear hatch over. Very minor damage at lower rear quarter panel, wouldn’t be seen if it had a standard rear bumper installed.
Instrumentation: Scan Gauge II unit installed and mounted near cluster. This unit plugs into the OBD-II connector and can display a wide variety of information. I have it set to display Speed, Voltage, Coolant Temp, and RPM. The unit also serves as a diagnostic scan tool and can display trouble codes and data-log driveability information.
Camper Bits: Pop top is in decent shape. Canvas is a bit dirty, but not torn anywhere and not brittle. The front screen has a small tear in it. The outer fiberglass shell portion of the top has been painted with truck bead liner and looks great, a new seal was installed after paint. The inner fiberglass portion does have a few cracks. A bit of fiberglass work will have it good as new, I just haven’t gotten to it yet. Top opens and closes easily as it should. The upper cushions are in great shape. Has an older awning installed, I believe its the one that came on the Country Homes Camper models. No tears or damage to canvas material, sets up easily, and the legs mount to the body so no worrying about staking it to the ground.
Interior: Instrument cluster lights and all interior lights have been swapped to LED versions. Entire floor area has been covered with sound deadening and insulation material. All new front area carpet. Dash is in good shape. Original seats with high quality covers. Original material is still in okay shape on passenger seat, but drivers is torn. Swivel seat base on passenger seat. Generic aftermarket radio with old speakers. Cargo floor is a plywood base over the insulation layer, then covered in vinyl “wood” flooring. Very easy to clean/sweep. Cabinet is a custom unit based off the original cabinet from Country Homes. Has plenty of storage, fresh water tank, sink, and flip up side table. Large “house” battery installed under the rear seat with fuse box for all accessories. There is a safe/lock box under the rear seat as well. It is bolted through the floor of the van, great place to keep passports and valuables safe when traveling. Small shelf with 2 usb and 1 12V outlet installed next to rear bed cushion. Rear bed cushion is home made by previous owner and the cover doesn’t fit it great, but it is all level and even when the bed is folded out. Headliner is a little bit dirty and stained, but not sagging and no large rips or tears.
Misc: Custom rear bumper swing-out assembly. It mounts using the original bumper brackets and location. Full size truck tool box adds a TON of extra storage. Tool box doubles as a table when in camp mode and swings out parallel next to the van. Very heavy duty, I always had about 200 lbs worth of gear in it. Gowesty lift springs are installed in the rear to compensate for the additional weight, suspension does not sag. Custom front hitch receiver installed up front, works great for a bike rack, but not designed for heavy loads. Home-made road shower included.
A few things to mention: The van was not originally equipped with air conditioning. That being said, I do have the compressor from the subaru, and the wiring harness has the appropriate connections if you wanted to add a/c. Cables for temperature and vent control work, but blower motor does not function. Van is a non-power steering model. The speedometer reads faster than actual speed (scan gauge unit installed to display actual speed), but odometer displays correctly.
Bonus things: Van will include a full stock of spare parts for emergency repairs and several camp accessories. Spare stash includes a new cv axle, cam and crank sensor, ign coil, spark plugs and wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, and various hoses. Will also come with a stack of gowesty parts like a full 8 piece window insulation kit, front door window screen slip covers, and front window rain guards. Also have a spare piece of the vinyl flooring already cut to size if you ever need to replace it.
All of the work and parts listed above were installed in early 2019 and have roughly 30k miles on them, with the exception of the cv axles. I swapped out the axles again about 3k miles ago since they started making some noise.
I documented the entire build process and can send you more detailed pictures if requested.
Extremely capable van ready for a new owner. Any questions please feel free to call or text any time.
