With great sadness we are selling our beloved 1987 Westy.

Original motor, rebuilt 80k miles ago. Runs like a top, with 220k on the odometer. We are the third (?) owner. She was sold to me by a competent Volkswagen mechanic who actually interviewed me before selling it. 🙂 Clean Texas title in my name. Registered as an Antique Vehicle in Texas through 2026 with original Texas plates form 1987 (see photos…they will come with the van).

You know the Westy – sleeps 4 comfortably, 2 burner stove, running water in a sink, propane on board, two rotating tables, swivel captain’s chairs. Everything you need in a compact, vintage package.

The good:
– Water-cooled 2.1L motor, making a whopping 92 hp! Rebuilt ~80k ago. Starts easily and makes all 92 German horses.
– 4 speed manual with good clutch. Top speed, 62mph up hill (but you’re riding in style!)
– 2 wheel drive, power brakes, power steering
– Lots of upgrades, including:
– JVC stereo with hands-free, bluetooth calling
– GoWesty auxiliary battery isolator and 105AH auxiliary battery (decouples the aux battery when the motor is off, so you do not drain your starting battery)
– 3D printed side vent holders
– 12v outlets in the rear with voltage meter
– Replaced propane tank (previous owner, but it is inspected and legal to fill)
– Replaced canopy (previous owner)
– Fold-out awning (with poles and ropes) mounted over the sliding rear door. Creates a very nice and large covered space just outside the camper.
– GoWesty refrigerator delete kit (removes OEM refrigerator, replaces with stock-appearing shelving and matching door). OEM refrigerator is included, and reported to be working per the previous owner who installed the kit.
– Replaced 2 of the 9 steel brake lines and fully flushed the system last year. Brakes nice and strong. Bought the entire set of pre-measured steel brake lines, so you get the remaining 7 with the van.
– GoWesty braided steel brake lines (previous owner) in place of stock rubber lines. Increases reliability and braking feel.
– Replaced both fuel filters. Including an extra Bosch fuel filter and new lifetime-warranty fuel pump (carry this with you, so it’s with you when you need it).
– Removable porta-potty on custom platform with built-in power center.
– Hella offroad lights.
– Newer paint (previous owner).
– Includes a nice set of 16″ wheels and tires to replace the stock 14″ wheels and tires. I paid $1k for these and never installed them. Includes all bolts and studs to fit up these wheels, purchased from GoWesty.
– Includes GoWesty A/C condenser, receiver-drier, and belts to get the OEM A/C running. Previous owner told me there was a leak in the hose. I bought all these parts last year in preparation to get the A/C going, but never got around to it. Your mechanic can handle this easily and replace the leaking hose if there is one at all. The compressor is in place and ready to go.

The bad:
-She’s got rust in various places, mainly the undercarriage and one of the side panels. I call it patina, but some may be fearful. We have camped in her in the driving Texas rain, and everything is watertight. The rust doesn’t bother me, but you may have other ideas. Just be aware that this vehicle clearly spent a few years in the north.
