1985 VW Westfalia Vanagon Automatic 2WD with 122,000 miles that needs new engine.
The story: My dad purchased this van back in the late 90’s just to drive around town. He used it pretty sparingly until about 2004 then let it sit in his driveway for years. I offered to buy it off him with the intent of fixing it up. Since it sat for well over a decade, I drop the tank and drained the gas. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. After changing the oil, I noticed an oil leak coming from a broken push rod tube. I decided to pull the engine and replace the heads with new AMC heads. I was able to remove the right head with a little effort. The left head, I tried to remove but eventually gave up. Now, I need to sell the van because I don’t have the time to finish the work it needs.
The Good: Since the engine is removed, this van is ready for a new engine or a conversion. A Subaru conversion was going to be my intentions after I gave up on the 1.9L. The interior is clean and original no major stains or damage. Seats, cushion, cabinets, carpet, all great condition. The transmission was rebuilt in 2000. The starter works, engine had strong spark, fuel injectors worked. New battery, fuel pump, fuel filter. Gas tank is removed and in good condition, no rust.
The Bad: The 1.9L engine still has the left head stuck on it which is damaged and beyond repair, its currently on an engine stand which the buyer can have. If you’re going to put another VW engine in, a couple parts will need to be replaced, mainly the crossover coolant pipe. The thermostat housing and water pump are corroded and should be replaced too. Three of the tires have popped while on the jack stands.
The Ugly: Topper has mold on the underside and the tent appears to have a hole in it. There’s some superficial dirt throughout the vehicle but shouldn’t be a problem after a detail. There’s one major rust spot on the lower driver side panel. Some other areas with minor rust are the rear door and latch, and light surface rust in couple spots around windows and seams. I can take additional pictures if requested.
My intention is to sell the vehicle for what I have in it. I am completely open to provide as much information and pictures about the van to insure it’s a good fit for the buyer. It will be sold as is, with the buyer responsible for removing the vehicle. The van is currently on four jack stands with three of the tires popped. The seller can either remove it with the tires as they are, bring a new set of wheels and put them on, or cover the additional cost of new wheels and I can install them. I imagine the best way to move the vehicle is either a flat bed tower or a Uhaul car trailer.
